Navigating the Beauty Aisle Just Got A Whole Lot Easier: An App that Helps You Shop for Greener Beauty

It is no secret that the Environmental Working Group has become an instrumental resource for us Green Beauty Bloggers. It’s a resource for ingredients and products alike that help us, help you navigate ingredient lists. While us bloggers are also telling you about efficacy and how we love certain products, this little app is going to change the way you shop daily. It will make you more aware of what’s really in your products – right while you’re in the shop.

This is the Game Changer natural beauty app of 2013.

So on to the good news! EWG’s Skin Deep Database is now in “app form” – never again will you be lost in shops reading the backs of labels. The EWG App called Skin Deep in the AppStore is an amazing and free resource for natural beauties and soon to be natural beauties alike.

Heather White, executive director at Environmental Working Group stated, “Safety profiles for tens of thousands of products are now literally at the fingertips of everybody strolling the aisles of any store in the [US]. This app will make choosing safer products for yourself and your family that much easier.”

The Feature Set

Scan Barcode

In a nutshell, the Skin Deep App uses your smartphone to access EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. For nearly 10 years, Skin Deep has combined product ingredient lists with information in more than 60 toxicity and regulatory databases to bring you real data on beauty and personal care products.

For those living in the US, you will be able to actually scan a barcode to see the score of the product you are considering buying. That makes this a whole lot easier, wouldn’t you agree? If you can’t get the barcode to work, you can also type a product name and search the database that way (great for those in other countries as well) :)

After you have the product scoring, you simply follow EWG’s easy-to-understand “0 to 10” scoring system: Zero reflects products that pose a low level of concern, and 10 shows those with ingredients that may be highly hazardous to your health. (The ratings are also colour coded from green to red to make things even easier).

History

Already scanned a product? You’ll find it safely stored in your history for later review. Time saved is well spent!

Favourites

Save your favourite products on a “favourites” list so that you can refer to and compare its score with other products.

Hope you love the app as much as I do!

*A few notes on the Environmental Working Group:

A trusted resource for health information since 1992, the non-profit Environmental Working Group developed Skin Deep because beauty and personal care products are not regulated, and chemical ingredients in many of these products have been linked to everything from skin allergies to infertility—even cancer. The concept can be scary, but Skin Deep makes it easy to take control of your  health.

I love this! I’ve been in the bathroom all morning scanning all my products, and was able to find most of them. For the ones that weren’t in the database yet, I got a message saying that the barcode would be uploaded to their database for further research. How exciting!
